Any plant can grow anywhere, as long as there is soil. That's why it's essential to learn how to manage your soil correctly to keep your trees safe and thriving.

Fertilizer can be pretty expensive, not to mention time-consuming to apply, too. So, it's only practical to use all your available resources to help maintain your soil.

So, no matter if you're into herb gardening or wants to take care of your lawn, keeping healthy soil is essential. To help you with it, here are a couple of pointers that you can consider.

Effective ways to maintain soil

  • Proper Testing
The Spruce Magazine says that it's essential to find out as much as you can about your soil. Fortunately, there are soil tests available to test the level of life in your yard as we as its texture. By getting an understanding of your soil, it'll help you stay informed of any potential deficiency or even pH issues.
  • Fix the ground's pH level
Once you've already tested the soil, you'll probably have an idea about its pH level. One thing that you need to remember is to avoid acidic soil. To improve your soil's pH level, you can supply it with organic matter and nutrients to fix its pH level. Neglecting to do so will heavily affect your plant's growth.

  • Cover the soil
Covering the soil is an excellent way to ensure that none of the healthy bacteria and organisms get disrupted. Improper tillage only destroys the soil's structure, which often takes years to repair. Remember that the more you disturb the ground, the harder it'll be to bring back its ecosystem. So, it's only proper to leave it as undisturbed as possible. You can put at least an inch or two of organic matter into the soil to cover it effectively. The insects and earthworms will naturally do the work for you.

  • Let it breathe
Another way to manage your soil is by keeping it as naturally loose as possible. That's why most gardeners these days often chose to plant their seedlings in raised beds to avoid soil compaction. Also, stepping on the ground or even pulling your wheelbarrows can cause the soil to get compact.

  • Maximize soil carbon
As most experts say, carbon is the building block of all life forms, especially plants. To fully utilize it, learning the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio is the key. Remember that soil microorganisms thrive well with a 24:1 C: N ratio, with all its 16 parts of carbon utilized for energy production and its eight maintenance functions. Look at the soil as an engine, and the carbon acts as the fuel. Meanwhile, nitrogen is the igniter.
