Wood-boring insects are a few of the most destructive pests that can ever get near your trees and plants. Unknown to most people, tree damage can already occur right under their noses from insects and mites. When this happens, the problem could have become widespread that it's already too late before you treat them. That's because various insects can cause extensive issues that are very difficult to identify.

All trees are vulnerable to pests and diseases that can cause them to fall ill or even die. Like any other health issue, identifying the problem beforehand gives you the best chances to treat your tree and restore its health. Here are a few signs that can help you know if pests are infesting your tree to help you with it.

Telltale signs of pest infestation

  • Chewed foliage
If you notice any of the leaves having small holes or jagged edges, there's a considerable possibility that insects may be eating your tree's foliage. It can either be a beetle, weevil, or insect larvae issue.

Various insects have unique chewing patterns and chew on different parts of the leaves. For example, beetles tend to eat the middle part of the leaves and leave only their veins. So, it's best to check your tree from time to time and call an expert immediately to help identify your problem's root cause if you see any.
  • Distorted leaves
Some insects, like aphids, have mouthparts designed to pierce through the bark to feed on its sap. These small, soft-bodied arthropods tend to multiply fast, which can cause quite a problem for any infected trees. A few foliage's are sensitive to the insect's saliva that aphids inject when they're feeding, so they often pucker when exposed to it. So, early detection is the key to help you save your tree.

  • Discolored foliage
Excessive mite population can also cause your tree's leaves to become yellow and brittle. That's because it sucks the liquid from the plant. Thus, causing its leaves to become dull. When this happens, the foliage tends to curl and get distorted. A few of the insects that have a similar impact include lace bugs and other scaled insects.

  • White spots
If you see any traces of white spots on the branches, leaves, and twigs, then there's a big chance that pests are infecting it. Scale insects tend to feed on plants and consume their internal fluids. In most cases, the white spots you often see are thousands of tiny white anthropoids that most homeowners commonly mistaken for molds. These insects can either be flat, with tiny flecks, while others have more apparent bumps with almost the same size as ladybugs.

These are only a few of the things you need to consider when protecting your tree from harmful insects. Diagnosing insect infestation on trees is not a simple feat. That's why it's best to leave it to the best tree care experts to diagnose your problem correctly. Doing so will help you know the root cause of the problem and even potentially save your tree.

I never knew that a tree would show signs of colored spots on its leaves, or trunk damage can indicate a pest infestation. Ensuring that your trees are healthy without signs of sickness is important before it becomes a safety hazard. I'll probably consider hiring a tree removal expert if ever one of my trees displays such symptoms.
